Media Release: Council consulting on proposal for shared aged care services

A proposal for Bayside City Council to provide in-home and social support services to Glen Eira residents could lead to the creation of a sustainable council-run service that meets both neighbouring communities’ needs.

Glen Eira Council has made a decision to seek feedback on the proposal from older residents and other service users, their loved ones, volunteers, carers and families, staff and their representatives and the wider community.

Developed in response to the Australian Government’s aged care reforms, the innovative approach comes after 45 Victorian councils stopped providing services. Only three metropolitan Melbourne councils plan to continue to provide services under the new reforms once the Australian Government’s reforms are in place.

Glen Eira Mayor, Cr Anne-Marie Cade, said that by working with Bayside City Council, a leader in council-run expanded aged care services, residents in both municipalities would be assured of receiving the quality services they always have, as well as services they may require as their needs become more complex.

“Glen Eira is fortunate to have such a well-experienced operator as a neighbour. Working with Bayside would provide our community with access to the same quality services they currently enjoy plus a wider range of aged care services. This model also creates employment opportunities for our staff,” Cr Cade said.

“The proposal is about enhancing services not just sustaining them. It’s about leveraging Bayside’s extensive experience and both workforces to ensure our residents’ evolving care needs can be met by a council-run service into the future.”

Council encourages all those with an interest in the issue to participate in the consultation program with feedback received to help inform the decision to be made by Council in mid-August.
