Footpath reconstruction — Gordon Street, Elsternwick

We’re making Gordon Street in Elsternwick more accessible by upgrading the footpath and adding new street furniture.

Upgrades like these are important in ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our community — and they contribute to local amenity and the character of neighbourhoods, which we know is important to the community.

What is happening?

We are replacing the footpath surface between 271 Glen Huntly Road and 11 Gordon Street, Elsternwick. As part of the works, we are:

  • Replacing the existing kerb and channel.
  • Retaining the existing street tree (out the front of the vacant building at 7 Gordon Street) and planting two new trees (out the front of Classic Cinema and Copycat Bar).
  • Replacing the existing litter bin.
  • Installing two new bench seats (out the front of Classic Cinema).
  • Retaining the existing garden bed at the corner of Glen Huntly Road and Gordon Street and planting new shrubs and plants.
  • Installing two new bike hoops (out the front of Classic Cinema).

To support a greener Glen Eira, where possible, we use sustainable and environmentally friendly resources and processes as part of our projects. In these upgrades, we’re using a recycled crushed rock — a base layer below the surface — which incorporates recycled crushed concrete, recycled asphalt and glass.

When is it happening?

Works are due to begin on Monday 5 May and will be completed by Monday 16 June 2025, weather permitting.

What are the impacts?

Works will take place between 7am to 5pm weekdays and some Saturdays, if required, between 8am to 2pm. During this time, you may notice some noise and dust from the worksite, and our contractors will do their best to minimise this.

Stages of works

The works will be completed in three stages:

  1. Reconstruction of all kerb and channel (one week).
  2. Reconstruction of footpath from Glen Huntly Road to Classic Cinema entry (two weeks).
  3. Reconstruction of footpath from Classic Cinema entry to the entry of underground car park (two weeks).

Access to Copycat Bar and Classic Cinema

Patrons will be able to access Copycat Bar and Classic Cinema during the works via their main entrances on Gordon Street. Temporary fencing will be used to create walkways to each of the businesses through the worksite. Other pedestrians using the street will be asked to use the footpath on the opposite side of Gordon Street. Traffic controllers and signage will be in place to support pedestrians navigating the area.

Parking

Eight car spaces will not be accessible during this works. This includes the five car spaces along Gordon Street, in front of Copycat Bar and Classic Cinema and three car spaces opposite Copycat Bar. This space will become the worksite.  The nearest disabled car space is around the corner at 230 Glen Huntly Road. Other car parks remain available along Gordon Street and Glen Huntly Road.

Kerbside rubbish collection

All kerbside waste collections will not be impacted by the works, please place your bins out for collection on their scheduled collection day. If you need help navigating the bins around or through the worksite, please ask one of our contractors onsite for support and they’ll help you bring your
