Statement of significance:

These trees fulfil the criteria of:

  • Horticultural or Genetic Value
  • Unique Location or Context
  • Aesthetic Value
  • Outstanding Habitat Value

This stand of 3 River Red Gums are self-sown specimens from original remnant vegetation in the area and as such may represent an important source of future propagating stock for indigenous trees. They are uniquely located within the carpark of Carnegie Train Station and combine with “Rosie” and the Woorayl Street Reserve group of trees to form part of the larger cluster of River Red Gums in the vicinity.

Although significantly impacted by the recent Level Crossing Removal works, these trees still provide significant amenity to the neighbourhood and their loss would negatively impact the local landscape.

The Carnegie cluster of River Red Gums has been identified in the “Biodiversity in Glen Eira” report as representing a biodiversity hotspot, forming a key wildlife corridor along with the River Red Gums within the Murrumbeena Railway Precinct.
