Statement of significance:

This tree fulfils the criteria of:

  • Horticultural or Genetic Value
  • Unique Location or Context
  • Particularly Old Specimen
  • Aesthetic Value
  • Outstanding Example of the Species
  • Outstanding Habitat Value

These 7 trees represent an important horticultural resource as possible propagating stock for locally indigenous trees. 2 of the trees are remnant specimens with the remaining trees self-sown from the indigenous vegetation. Collectively they represent some of the very last remnant native vegetation in Glen Eira.

The 2 oldest and largest trees in this group predate European colonisation of the country, with other trees predating the clearing and development of the local area. They provide significant amenity to the landscape and contribute to the neighbourhood character.

The Carnegie cluster of River Red Gums has been identified in the “Biodiversity in Glen Eira” report as representing a biodiversity hotspot, forming a key wildlife corridor along with the River Red Gums within the Murrumbeena Railway Precinct.
