Vibrant activity centres with a thriving local economy

This strategy aims to ensure the community has adequate job opportunities close to their homes. Currently, 80 per cent of Glen Eira residents travel outside the City for work.

Both the Glen Eira Council and Community Plan 2017–2021 and Plan Melbourne outlined the 20-minute neighbourhood principle. This aims to give you safe, attractive places to access work and services, within a 20-minute walk, cycle or public transport trip.

Our new jobs framework outlines how we're reviewing planning requirements to provide more job opportunities for the local community.

What did community engagement tell us?

We asked you for feedback and ideas around the local economy, and you called for:

  • a vibrant nightlife for our local centres
  • centres that provide experiences, not just transactions.

A high number of residents (85 per cent) said they were either satisfied or very satisfied with the weekly food shopping options in their area. A similar number were satisfied with the local specialty food options.

Objectives

Our key local economy objectives are to:

  • reduce the negative impacts of commuting by improving the number of local jobs, especially by creating new professional office space
  • create activity centres that become the centre of community life, with modern, well-serviced hubs and experience-based businesses
  • support a thriving local economy that is built on connections and collaboration.
  • promote our centres as vibrant night-life and weekend destinations by creating more hospitality floorspace.
