Ames Avenue, Carnegie open space

We’re creating public open space for our community to enjoy in Ames Avenue, Carnegie.

We know our green open spaces and places are important to our community — it supports them to be healthy and connected and contribute to a more sustainable and liveable City.

That’s why we have purchased a site in Ames Avenue, Carnegie to turn into open space for our community to enjoy.

This is part of our commitment to proactively acquiring, developing and unlocking public open spaces and places for our community to enjoy now — and for generations to come.

This site will play a crucial role in Council’s expanding focus on indigenous flora, natural gardens, and the enhancement of local biodiversity.

Future long-term upgrades to the space, which the community shaped designs for and Council endorsed in 2024, are subject to funding. We’re continuing to advocate to the Victorian and Australian Government’s for funding to support future upgrades to the space.

The final design prioritises passive gardens and greenery, while providing recreational open space for a range of activities, abilities and community needs. Climate-sensitive planting of both indigenous and exotic species, along with the incorporation of water-sensitive design elements, will create a space adaptable to climate change.

Update: February 2025

We have demolished buildings at the site so that it can be temporarily converted into green open spaces that can be enjoyed by the community until we secure funding to turn these into vibrant open spaces — as part of our long-term planning.

In late 2024, we sprayed new grass seeds on the site with hopes to open the space to the community in early 2025.

Unfortunately, the seeds didn’t establish as we had hoped. We are replanting the site in February 2025.

We plan to open the space — which will also include seating — for community use in May.

Thank you for your patience.
