Statement from Glen Eira Mayor Cr Anne-Marie Cade on Special Council Meeting dangerous conduct

At last night’s Special Council Meeting, we were incredibly disappointed that community members, Councillors and officers were put in danger by a person throwing an egg from the audience directly at some of our Councillors.

This is absolutely unacceptable conduct and Council condemns this behaviour.

I immediately ended the meeting to ensure the safety of our residents, Councillors and officers.

Sadly, a Councillor sustained an injury to their eye which has warranted further medical examination.

These are elected representatives just doing their job in their place of work— making decisions on behalf of the residents who voted for them.

We want all members of our community to feel safe and included at our Council meetings.

We have a range of security measures in place to protect people accessing the Public Gallery of the Council Chamber.

We will continue to assess ways to ensure our meetings are safe and inclusive for everyone.

Council takes this matter very seriously and will fully cooperate with Victoria Police’s investigation.
