Cycling made safer — new cycling path complete

A new two-way three-metre-wide separated cycling lane along Queens Avenue, Caulfield East connecting Caulfield and Glen Huntly train stations is now complete.

The path was officially opened by Glen Eira Mayor Cr Simone Zmood and Member for Southern Metropolitan Region Ryan Batchelor MLC on Thursday 19 December 2024.

Glen Eira City Council delivered the works on behalf of the Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP), who funded the project as part of the Glen Huntly Level Crossing Removal Project.

The new path and surrounds were designed and built following extensive engagement with the community. The design retains the trees on the racecourse side of Queens Avenue and limits impacts to residential parking — both of which were important to locals and contribute to neighbourhood character.

The path’s construction before the end of the year is a fantastic outcome for Glen Eira and future users of the path, and a good example of collaboration between different levels of government for the benefit of local communities.

To support pedestrian, cyclist and driver safety, a speed limit of 50 kilometres per hour has been set along the street.

We know access to safe cycling and transport routes contribute to our community’s quality of life. That’s why we are delivering active modes of transport. The separated cycling path between Neerim and Normanby Roads will provide a safe and accessible cycling connection for the community.

The new path will also make riding bikes safer, more attractive and reduce the impact cars have on the environment, which is a focus of ourIntegrated Transport Strategy. This section of bicycle path meets a Victorian Government commitment to deliver the missing link in the area’s cycling corridor.

We’d like to acknowledge our previous Council, who under former Mayor Cr Anne-Marie Cade, got the project underway and engaged with the community.

With the removal of the final two level crossings at Neerim and Glen Huntly Roads, Glen Eira is now level crossing free. LXRP has also built seven new stations and delivered new open space and other walking and cycling paths in the area.

Safe cycling routes are transformative. They're not just about getting from point A to point B — they’re about reimagining how we move, how we interact with our environment, and how we care for our community’s collective wellbeing.

This new path really is a fantastic outcome for Glen Eira and a good example of collaboration between different levels of government and residents, for the betterment of local communities.
