Glen Eira secures $2.3 million federal grant to transform active transport network

Glen Eira residents will be able to cycle and walk safer after Glen Eira City Council secured $2.3 million in funding through the Australian Government's Active Transport Fund (ATF).

The funding will support a transformative project focusing on a core north-south pathway connecting three high-growth activity centres — Moorabbin, Carnegie, and Murrumbeena — recently designated by the Victorian Government for intensified development. The project includes comprehensive local networks, amenity improvements, and lighting upgrades to create a more accessible and safer environment for all community members.

Combined with Council's contribution of $2.5 million, the total investment of $4.8 million will be implemented through to 2028–29.

Glen Eira Mayor Cr Simone Zmood said the funding would help active transport infrastructure across the municipality.

"This significant investment builds upon our proven track record in delivering successful active transport projects, including the Djerring Trail, Frankston Rail Trail, Rosstown Rail Trail, and Queens Avenue bike lane," she said.

"We recognise that encouraging active transport requires more than just paving — it needs a pleasant and comfortable environment where everyone feels safe, particularly our more vulnerable community members."

The project has received strong support from community organisations and elected representatives, including Federal Member for Hotham, Hon Clare O'Neil MP, who highlighted the opportunity to "optimise and transform these systems and spaces so they are better integrated and interconnected to meet the growing demand of Melbourne's south east."

Federal Member for Macnamara, Hon Josh Burns MP, said the federal government was proud to partner with Glen Eira City Council.

“Our investment of $2.3 million will help connect our communities and give locals healthy and safe ways to travel between these wonderful parts of Macnamara," he said.

Recent data from Council's Travel Survey (2023) identified safety concerns as a key barrier to cycling, particularly among women. The planned improvements will address these concerns through enhanced connectivity, safety features, and accessibility upgrades.

The project aligns with Council's commitment to supporting sustainable growth and reducing car dependency, with a target of reducing car use to 50 per cent of all trips. The new infrastructure will facilitate better connections to neighbouring local government areas while contributing to a more active, liveable, and sustainable future for Glen Eira.
