Final electoral structure for Glen Eira City Council announced

The Victorian Government has released the new electoral structure of Glen Eira City Council, which will take effect from the next local government election in October 2024.

The Victorian Government's final report is available at the Local Government Victoria's website.

The changes move Glen Eira City Council from three wards, each represented by three Councillors to nine wards, each represented by a single Councillor.

Glen Eira City Council Chief Executive Officer Rebecca McKenzie acknowledged the changes and committed to working with the Victorian Government on its successful implementation.

However, Ms McKenzie said Council was disappointed to have not seen the recommendations it put forward on behalf of the community in its August 2023 submission implemented.

Council had recommended:

  • a different model dividing existing ward boundaries, rather than merging, for fair and equitable representation; and
  • changing some of the proposed ward names to better reflect First Nations history and continuing connection to Country, particularly where Glen Eira place names (such as suburbs, streets and areas of significance) are already derived from Indigenous languages.

The nine wards — instead of being divided from existing wards — are divided along main roads and suburb boundaries. The final structure also uses place names based on roads and parks, rather than First Nations names as Council recommended.

McKenzie also expressed strong disappointment the Victorian Government's final report fails to acknowledge the Boon Wurrung peoples as Traditional Owners, after Council previously called for the same omission in the preliminary report be rectified.

“We will work to embed the changes in the lead up to the next election and encourage suitably qualified candidates to put themselves forward to represent their communities at the next election,” Ms McKenzie said.

Electoral structure

A new electoral structure and new ward boundaries will take effect from the October 2024 local government election.

The Victorian Government’s electoral changes moved Glen Eira City Council from the existing three wards, each represented by three Councillors, to nine wards, each represented by a single Councillor.

The nine new wards will be divided along main roads and suburb boundaries. The wards are named Bambra, Booran, Caulfield Park, Jasper, Mallanbool, Moorleigh, Murrumbeena, Orrong and Wattle Grove.
