Glen Eira’s financially sustainable future

We are committed to providing high-quality services to Glen Eira residents, businesses and visitors now and into the future. But right now, costs are increasing faster than ever.

Council provides a huge range of services and facilities for our community. Whether you are spending time in our parks, gardens, libraries, and recreational facilities, using our immunisation service, visiting loved ones in residential aged care, accessing our waste and recycling services, driving or cycling on our roads or walking on our footpaths, these are all examples of the more than 120 services and facilities Council provides for the whole community every day.

These services are essential in ensuring a healthy, well-connected and liveable place for our residents, businesses and visitors. Some of our services are used every day, and others are there exactly when you need them, but they all have a vital purpose for our community.

But like families and businesses everywhere, Council isn’t immune to the impacts of rapid inflation and the rising costs of delivering projects and services. For all councils — including Glen Eira — it’s becoming tougher to operate in the same way as we have in the past and we need to be responsible and plan now to ensure our long-term financial sustainability.

To do this most effectively, we need to consider a range of options and want to hear your views to help us make the right decisions to ensure a financially sustainable future Glen Eira.

Financial pressures — what we need to plan for

  • Our revenue is shrinking.
The State Government announced we can increase rates up to a maximum of 3.5 per cent this year. This is significantly lower than the inflation rate and means our costs will keep increasing faster than our rates revenue.
  • Our projects and services are costing much more.
Due to growing inflation, our projects are consistently costing 10 to 20 per cent more than we’d budgeted pre-inflation and the costs to deliver our services are increasing year on year.

What’s next?

Between now and the end of the year, we will be seeking your thoughts and feedback on potential options and priorities for the future.

Over the coming months we will be providing a range of opportunities to share your views.

Keep your eye on Glen Eira News, social media and our website to stay up to date and find out about opportunities to get involved.
