International Holocaust Remembrance Day

On 27 January, International Holocaust Remembrance Day marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau.

This year is particularly significant as it marks 80 years since the liberation and the end of the Second World War.

Glen Eira is proud to be the cultural home of Australia’s Jewish population, with the largest Jewish population in Australia.

We pay our respects to Holocaust victims, survivors, and their families, and acknowledge the importance of keeping Holocaust memory alive.

We stand with the Holocaust survivors of Victoria, and the world, in commemorating this date and appreciate the significance of preserving their voices for future generations.

To acknowledge the anniversary of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, we will light Glen Eira Town Hall yellow.

Recent times have been particularly challenging for the Jewish community in Glen Eira, who have directly felt the effects of the rise in antisemitism globally. We continue to be guided by the International Holocaust Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism which we adopted in 2022 and stand with the Jewish community against all forms of antisemitism.

We are proud to also be home to the Melbourne Holocaust Museum in Elsternwick. The Melbourne Holocaust Museum invites the community to join them for the commemoration of International Holocaust Remembrance Day and the Liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau on Tuesday 28 January for their event, Testimonies of Freedom.
