Long-serving CEO Rebecca McKenzie leaving Glen Eira in good hands

Long-serving Glen Eira City Council Chief Executive Officer Rebecca McKenzie will conclude her time as CEO in August this year, after nine years at the helm.

Ms McKenzie will leave Council with some of its highest-ever staff engagement levels, high levels of community satisfaction in Council services, an improving financial position in the face of economic challenges, and a committed new Councillor group who have hit the ground running.

Glen Eira Mayor Cr Simone Zmood said that while she was saddened by Rebecca’s decision, she supported and respected her desire to pursue new opportunities.

“We have been incredibly lucky to have had Rebecca’s experienced hand steering the ship for nine outstanding years and across three Council terms.” Cr Zmood said.

“I think I speak for the entire Councillor group in saying we very much wanted Rebecca to extend her contract, but she felt strongly the time was right – for her and the organisation – to make a change.

“We are grateful that Rebecca has supported this Councillor group to start on the right foot, hitting the ground running by delivering important projects while planning for the next four years with our community.”

Cr Zmood said Councillors would immediately begin the search for a new Chief Executive Officer who could continue the momentum Rebecca has built. Council has appointed Future Leadership to conduct the search and support them as they recruit.

“Six months’ notice allows us plenty of time to search for the right person to carry this amazing organisation forward through this Council term and beyond,” she said.

Ms McKenzie made the announcement to Glen Eira staff today, saying it is the right time for fresh leadership.

“These have been some of the most professionally rewarding years of my life and I do not take for granted the trust Councillors, Council officers and the community have put in me,” Ms McKenzie said.

“The right time to leave is when things are going well. As an organisation, we have a strong and stable Councillor group and executive team of talented people who believe in what we do and genuinely care about our community.

“I have a deep respect for our Council and our community. That’s why I have planned my exit with the Mayor, Councillors and executive team in a way that will ensure a smooth and calm transition in leadership.

“I know Glen Eira is in good hands and ready for whatever comes next.
