Mayors pen joint letter to Premier calling for action on safety

Four former Glen Eira mayors today joined current Mayor Cr Simone Zmood in writing to the Premier to express deep concern for community safety and wellbeing.

Recent events have raised awareness of longstanding antisemitism, disruptive community behaviour and violent attacks.

The group of current and former mayors said the whole community has a fundamental right to feel safe. They called for a permanently increased police presence in Glen Eira, especially at the Caulfield Police Station, saying temporary measures have not been enough.

“Glen Eira is home to a diverse and vibrant population,” they said.

“We feel strongly that maintaining public safety and an environment where everyone feels welcome are critical responsibilities of government.

“Council is investing in a range of measures to improve safety and to build social cohesion, working collaboratively with community groups and organisations.

“But what is needed and expected is a more visible local police presence to send a strong message that helps to deter criminal activity, reassure community members, and foster a greater sense of security for all.”

The current and former councillors also shared their long-standing concerns with the Minister for Police and Glen Eira’s state and federal MPs, in an effort to create a shared effort across all levels of government.
