Our new Good Governance Framework

We have developed a Good Governance Framework, which is a valuable resource for the community, Councillors and Glen Eira staff to build a practical understanding of our governance processes.

It aims to show the value of good governance and outline how the various aspects of Council’s governance system work together.

The primary role of the Council and the elected Councillors is to focus on the strategic delivery of the 120 services it provides and the development of policies that are in the best interest of the community.

This Framework supports the work that Council does to ensure its decision making is fair and reasonable. It provides the community with confidence that Council’s decision-making processes are in the best interests of the community, meet legislative requirements and build trust and respect.

The Good Governance Framework is not intended to replace the legislation, regulations, policies or governance documents that govern these processes, rather it seeks to provide an easy to digest reference guide that supports a better understanding of the governance system.

About good governance

Good governance relies on having effective structures, systems, processes and procedures in place to ensure Council is operating in accordance with the principles set out in the Local Government Act 2020.

Good governance is about more than just complying with minimum requirements, it helps to build an effective, fair and transparent culture for Council that supports the best possible outcomes being achieved for the community.

Good governance also helps to ensure everyone — Councillors, Council officers and the community understand their roles and responsibilities and the rules, practices and other mechanisms in place to guide how Council conducts its business and carries out its duties.
