The Elsternwick Club — where heritage meets open space

Shape the future of Elsternwick together.

Exciting things are happening in Elsternwick, and we want you to be part of it! Last year we acquired The Elsternwick Club site in Sandham Street, Elsternwick. This site offers a unique opportunity to create a vibrant public open space designed for our community’s needs.

Why this site matters

Glen Eira has more than 70 parks and reserves, and the community often tells us they think our parks are some of Melbourne’s best and most well-maintained. However, we have the least open space amount per person of any council area in Melbourne. Expanding open spaces is one of our top priorities.

As our population grows, ensuring access to parks and recreational areas becomes even more important for our community’s wellbeing and sustainability. The Elsternwick Club site helps fill a recognised gap in public open space in the area.

Have your say

The transformation of this site is a long-term project and it starts with you. We’re kicking off a multi-year community engagement program to create a shared vision for this special space. Here’s how you can get involved:

  • Community Reference Group — apply to join a diverse group of Elsternwick residents and stakeholders to play a key role in shaping the site’s future. Members will gather ideas, provide recommendations and act as ambassadors throughout this project.

  • Public consultation — from reimagining how the heritage building will be used, to designing open spaces, your input will help shape a space that reflects our community’s values and aspirations.

This is more than a redevelopment project — it’s a collaborative journey to create a legacy for future generations. Together, let’s transform The Elsternwick Club site into a vibrant community hub that celebrates our shared history and enriches our future.

The first phase of engagement runs from Wednesday 5 February to Wednesday 5 March 2025.

To meet Council officers and learn more, join us at pop-up events or visit the Open Day at The Elsternwick Club on Sunday 2 March.
