Glen Eira is a Tree City of the World

We are thrilled to announce that our commitment to a sustainable future in Glen Eira has landed us recognition as a Tree City of the World.

The Tree Cities of the World program was developed by the Arbor Day Foundation and the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). Aiming to connect cities around the world, the program is committed to inspiring cities and towns to care fir and celebrate their urban tree canopy.

Glen Eira has been recognised as a city that shares a commitment to ensuring urban forests and trees are properly maintained, sustainably managed, and duly celebrated.

This comes at a particularly significant time as we focus on expanding and protecting tree-canopy coverage throughout Glen Eira through our Canopy Tree Protection Local Law.

This new law is proposed to protect our urban forest canopy – the fragile, essential network of trees that shade and cool our streets and footpaths throughout Glen Eira.

The local law would support our Urban Forest Strategy and Council's aim to grow Glen Eira's tree canopy from 12.5 per cent to 22 per cent by 2040.

Glen Eira has been recognised and accepted in the program by meeting the Tree Cities of the World standards of recognition:

  • established responsibility for tree management by appropriate staff.
  • set rules in place detailing how the city’s trees are to be managed.
  • inventories of the city’s tree assets to underpin their management.
  • dedicated a budget to enable appropriate tree management practices.
  • celebrated trees with their community.

We know tree-canopy coverage is important to the community, and we are excited that our efforts have gained global recognition as we work towards a brighter future.
