Glen Eira Council social media and online community guidelines

Glen Eira City Council's social media pages are here to inform residents, businesses and visitors about our services, activities and events. We generally don’t promote third-party events, services and activities.

We encourage and invite you to engage with us on our social media channels. We want to offer a positive experience for all community members who comment on our news and updates. We hope you feel confident and welcome to join these online conversations. To keep our online communities safe and respectful, we have created this set of guidelines for the standards and behaviour expected across all our social media channels.  

We moderate our social media channels between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday, except for public holidays, and reserve the right to remove inappropriate content, turn off comments, and ban any community member in breach of our guidelines.

Guidelines 

Respectful conduct 

Posts or tags that use abusive, inflammatory, or obscene language will be removed without notification. We ask that you stay polite and respectful when posting. We welcome feedback, including feedback that challenges and questions, as long as it remains respectful.  

Confidentiality 

We place a high value on safeguarding personal information. Please do not share confidential or sensitive data such as phone numbers or addresses on our social platforms. To keep everyone safe, comments containing this kind of information will be removed. For more information, download our Privacy policy (PDF, 58KB).

Bullying and harassment 

All contributors are expected to treat each other with dignity and respect, fostering an environment free from intimidation or offensive behaviour. To keep everyone safe, comments breaching this guideline will be removed and the person posting may be suspended or banned.

Child safeguarding

We are committed to being a Child Safe Organisation, this includes promoting safety and wellbeing while minimising the opportunity for children and young people to be harmed in online environments. To ensure children and young people are safe and feel safe, any comments or images breaching this guideline will be deleted and reported in line with Council’s Child Safeguarding Policy and procedures.

Copyright and intellectual property 

Do not infringe upon copyright or intellectual property laws when sharing content on our platforms. Always give proper credit to the rightful creators of the material you share. 

Non-discrimination 

Posts or tags that include discriminatory comments attacking age, disability, family status, gender, nationality, race, social origin, sexuality, religion, or political beliefs will be removed and the person posting may be suspended or banned. For more information visit: Action against racism and discrimination

Staying on topic 

Please avoid commenting on posts that are unrelated to the post's topic. Comments or tags that are off-topic or repetitive will be removed.  

Disruption and spam 

Any deliberate disruption, trolling, or spamming is strictly prohibited and will be removed and the person posting may be suspended or banned. 

Promotion 

Our online spaces are not platforms for commercial or political party or campaign promotion. Please avoid promoting your business, political party or campaign or any commercial interests within our digital communities. Comments and tags that are considered commercial promotions or advertising may be removed.  

Illegal activity

Posts that breach the law including copyright, privacy, defamation, discrimination, and harassment will be removed without notification.

Compliance with platform terms 

In addition to our guidelines, you must comply with the Terms of Service on specific platforms.
