In-home and Social Support Services to remain council-led service in Glen Eira

Glen Eira residents will continue to have the option of council-run, in-home and social support services which are set to transition to Bayside City Council from 11 November 2024.

The decision, made at Council’s meeting last night, follows extensive consultation with clients of the service, their carers and families, our staff and the wider community. The proposal was made in response to the Australian Government’s aged care reforms.

The reforms will significantly challenge Glen Eira City Council’s ability to provide in-home and social support services. Only four metropolitan Melbourne councils, plan to continue to provide services under the new arrangements once the Australian Government’s reforms are in place.

Bayside City Council is one of those four councils. Bayside has delivered its services for more than 50 years and like Glen Eira, it has a strong and trusted reputation within the community and has developed invaluable expertise in the sector.

Glen Eira Mayor Cr Anne-Marie Cade said the decision follows extensive consultation with clients of the service, their carers and families, our staff and the wider community.

“Our extensive consultation with clients, carers and community showed strong support for the change because it safeguards the option for a council-run service for Glen Eira residents into the future,”
Cr Cade said.

“The arrangement between Glen Eira and Bayside City Councils will ensure continuity of high-quality care, continued availability of council-led services into the future, and employment opportunities for Glen Eira City Council staff.”

“To support a successful transition, we are developing a detailed transition plan to make the changeover as smooth as possible from 11 November 2024.”

This decision does not impact Warrawee Residential Aged Care services which Glen Eira will continue to own and manage, nor Glen Eira’s other seniors services such as senior citizens clubs, and independent living units.
